The British Geophysical Association (BGA) are carrying out a data collection exercise to try and understand the reasons behind low numbers of student uptake on UK undergraduate geophysics courses. These involve a series of questionnaires, targeting all relevant stake-holders:
- UK high school students 16-18 – to understand motivators of degree choice and current awareness of geophysics
- UK high school teachers/careers advisors – to understand motivators of degree choice and current awareness/taught content relevant to geophysics
- UK undergraduate students (both those currently studying geophysics and those that are not) and recent geophysics graduates – to understand what attracts or puts people off studying our subject, and learn whether geophysics degrees currently prepare graduates well for the work place
- Industry employers – To understand if there is still a demand/business case for geophysics graduates, to help ensure universities are teaching industry relevant information on our courses and to facilitate better links between universities/industry and schools
The data collected by these surveys and what we can do to address the problem will be discussed at a Geophysics into High schools meeting held in Leeds on 17th May 2024.
